Southold came to play and they came with a vengeance.
After losing game two 4-1, ending their unbeaten streak at 21, the Settlers were ready for the rubber match with Pierson. They called on their game one ace Dylan Clausen and after a rocky first inning that ended with a 3-2 Pierson lead, Clausen delivered, fanning nine batters in six innings.
Clausen’s performance was bolstered by Southold’s bats and aided by a Pierson team that couldn’t get its game on. Pierson made five errors and an early pitching change only nade things worse. By the sixth inning Southold had a commanding 14-4 lead.
Pat McFarland took the mound at the top of the seventh and finished things off and Southold (22-1) claimed the county Class C championship.
Bill Burns connected for his first home run of the season, a towering 302 foot shot over the left field fence. Shane Zimmer had five RBIs.
Southold faces the as-yet undetermined Nassau Class C champion in two weeks.
