William “Bill” R. Schlegel of Southold and formerly of Merrick died on May 16, 2017. He was 97 years old.
He was born in New York City on April 2, 1920 to Emil and Caroline Schlegel and later served in the U.S. Coast Guard landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.
For many years, Bill was a salesman for Merrick Dodge.
Predeceased by his first wife Eleanor, he is survived by his wife Marie L. Schegel, his daughters Patricia Cairo and Sue DeLuca, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and Marie’s daughter Cheryl Janlewicz.
The family received friends on Sunday, May 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 22 at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. John Carrick officiated. Interment followed at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington.
