Greenporters are a hardy lot and this morning’s drenching rain and stiff winds did not dissuade them from marching up Main Street to the municipal dock for the annual ceremony in memory of the nation’s war dead.
Village officials, retired service members, scouts and residents young and old joined the early-morning Memorial Day parade, marching to the dock to the beat of a pair of drums. At the end of the dock, in a driving wind, they said a prayer, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. Then, as taps were played by Matthew Swain, tossed flowers into the harbor.
The Greenport Fire Department served refreshments afterward at the Third Street Firehouse.
