The Oysterponds Historical Society scored a coup last year when Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor attended and read the Declaration of Independence to villagers celebrating the day (see prior story here). While she’s not scheduled for this year, anticipation is still running high for the patriotic event.

There will be lots of flag waving and bunting visible in the town as celebrants take part in the day’s activities. First, there will be a parade stepping off at the Civil War Monument and ending at the steps of the Old Point Schoolhouse with the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. After that, community members will gather in Poquatuck Park for hot dogs, sweet treats, music and games.

The parade brings out lots of marchers, fire trucks, antique cars, civic groups and children on bikes (and even occasionally on pogo sticks). Prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated bicycle. Well-behaved and well-dressed pets are welcome if they are leashed.

The parade begins at noon. The picnic ends at 3 pm.
