County announces aerial larvicide spraying plans June 21-22

Suffolk County plans aerial larvicide spraying of marshlands across the county today and tomorrow, the county health department announced yesterday afternoon.

Helicopters flying at low altitude will spray VectoBac 12AS Liquid Concentrate (Bti – Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) and Altosid Liquid Larvicide Concentrate (methoprene) to control mosquito larvae, according to a county press department.

Spraying will take place June 21 and 22 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Should weather conditions prevent completion of the work, it will be continued on the next suitable day, the health department said.

Marshes on the East End are among those targeted for spraying, according to a list released, including:

New Suffolk, Great Hog Neck, Kerwin Boulevard, Pipes Neck Creek and Pipes Cove in the Town of Southold;

Indian Island, Overlook, Crescent Duck Farm and Aquebogue Farm in the Town of Riverhead;

Iron Point, Flanders in the Town of Southampton.

The products used by the vector control division are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits, according to the county’s press release.

“No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity,” the health department said.
