Organizers planning Mattituck all-class reunion to reunite old friends and raise money for scholarships

The Mattituck Cutchogue Alumni Committee is organizing a reunion for all those who have ever graduated from, taught at or worked in the Mattituck-Cutchogue school district.

The event kicks off on Friday, July 21 with a pig roast at Mattituck’s Crazy Fork restaurant and continues on Saturday, July 22 with a family friendly beach party featuring games, raffles and a D.J.

Committee member Denise Goehringer Geis is hoping that the reunion will bring local people together and raise money for scholarships for deserving students.

“As Mattituck has gotten bigger I think we’ve lost some of our unity,” she said. “We want to try to bring that back.”

Geiss and fellow committee members Michael Sanchez, Eric Hubbard, Lisa Tuthill Boyd and Missy McCabe began planning for the first of what will be a bi-annual reunion last September. Several others have jumped in to help at meetings also, said Geis.

“The first year of an all-class reunion is the hardest,” she said. “It’s tough to get the word out. We spoke to people who ran Greenport’s all-class reunion and found out that over the years, the number of attendees has tripled from around 200 at the first reunion to around 650 at their most recent one. So there is definitely interest in this type of event.”

Right now Geis estimates that around 80 people have signed up.

The committee has begun raising money through donations from alumni and local businesses and hopes to raise more through the raffles and sale of food at the picnic.

They gave out their first scholarship to a Mattituck student yesterday, said Geis.

“Education is important to a successful future and our goal is to unite the alumni, administration, faculty and the community to raise money for scholarships to help deserving students further their education and realize their dreams,” she said.

Local businesses have been donating gift certificates for the reunion raffle and Geis is also asking businesses to sponsor a table at the picnic.
