Southold High School held its 111th commencement ceremony this afternoon and the 82 members of the Class of 2017 bid farewell to a school many have attended their entire educational lives.

Salutatorian Meg Pickerell spoke of the importance of loving the work we choose to do and encouraged her fellow graduates to follow their hearts:

“When we listen to our hearts and follow our passions, no one can stop us — not even our biggest critics.”

Valedictorian Robert Kruszeski’s lively speech had the audience laughing out loud, but mixed in with the jokes and funny stories were poignant words about the power of positivity:

“So as these graduates move on to bigger and better things, remember that you don’t have it that bad, keep your chin up and keep in mind that a little optimism can allow you to hurdle life’s problems and barrel over life’s roadblocks.”

Superintendent David Gamberg’s reminded the graduates of all the people who contributed to their education, from the teachers and administrators to the supportive community members.

“When we provide an education to the youth of our community,” he said, “it is we who also benefit. We are rekindled with that youthful spirit and exuberance that you possess. We are enchanted with your energy and enthusiasm. We marvel at all that you do.”

High School principal William Galati shared what he called the basic ingredients to consider to “live your best story.”

“Always believe in yourself. Find and secure your passion in life. Be in control of your life. Create opportunities and live them. Spend time with family and say thanks to mom and dad. Follow your heart. Live life today; don’t wait until tomorrow. Laugh every day. Spend time with people you admire. Be grateful, give back, be generous. Show compassion and cherish every moment. Be true to yourself, work hard, dedicate yourselves and your dreams will come true.”

Over $1,695,000 in tuition, awards, scholarships and bonds were given out during the ceremony.
