Joseph N. Vail, 69

Joseph N. Vail of Riverhead died Friday, June 23, 2017. He was 69 years old.

Born in Greenport on November 8, 1947, he spent his childhood in Mattituck and later Red Cedar Point.

Joe spent much of his life hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors with his family and friends. He graduated from Mercy High School and served in the Army for two years. He married his wife of 49 years, Barbara, on May 4, 1968. Joe spent his entire career in the family business of car sales. He started off at Vail Motors in Riverhead and worked alongside his grandfather, father and brothers. He was a long-time and active member of the Lions Club, including a term as president.

Joe was known for his honesty, integrity and sense of humor (he loved a corny joke), his family said. Joe was an amazing brother, husband, father and Poppy, his family said.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Joseph and his wife Allyson, by his daughter Rachel, and by his grandchildren Aidan, Nate and Maggie. He is also survived by his siblings Carl, Donna, Walter and Diana.

Visitation will take place Sunday, June 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Avenue, Riverhead.  

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 26 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial follow at Calverton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
