Capital One files application with federal regulators to establish new branch on Main Road in Mattituck

Capital One Bank has made official its plans to establish a branch in the new building on Main Road in Mattituck that was originally slated to house a Hudson City Savings Bank branch.

The Virginia-based bank filed an application last week with the U.S. Treasury Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, seeking permission to establish the new branch location.

Rumors have been circulating for the past year about Capital One possibly taking the Main Road space, since the developer of the property said he had a signed letter of intent with a bank but could not name the institution due to s nondisclosure agreement.

Capital One currently maintains a branch on Love Lane in a building owned by the bank, as well as a satellite branch with a drive-up window in Mattituck Plaza.  A Capital One spokesperson declined comment on the bank’s future plans for both of those locations.  It is unlikely the bank, which has closed hundreds of branch locations in the past few years nationwide, would maintain more than one branch in Mattituck. Branch closings have been in response to changing customer habits and preferences, as more people and businesses conduct banking electronically.

The 3,241-square-foot building on Main Road was approved for a bank use by the Southold Planning Board in 2009. The original developer halted construction and the empty, unfinished building sat vacant for a number of years. Mattituck builder Paul Pawlowski purchased the property in November 2015.

In addition to finishing the bank building, Pawlowski built the 9,500-square-foot two-story building depicted on the approved site plan for the property. The building, adjacent to the new bank building, is approved for two retail shops and a 16-seat restaurant on the ground floor with offices on the second floor.

The 30-day period for public comment on Capital One’s application extends through July 20. Comments may be directed to:
