Southold Town police blotter: June 19 – June 26

Excerpts from the Southold Town Police Press Reports, June 26, 2017

On June 20 police received an anonymous report that two people had shot frozen paintballs at three windows of a Greenport residence, shattering them. The owner of the residence did not wish to press charges as he was planning on renovating the house anyway. Police will follow up with the two suspects.

A Greenport woman called police on June 20 to report that a Rolex watch had been stolen from her home on June 15. Police are investigating.

On June 20 someone threw rocks at three windows at the Laurel Lake Preserve, causing $900 in damage. Police are investigating.

A Peconic woman phoned police on June 22 to report that someone was banging loudly on her door. Police checked the area but found no suspects.

A Miller Place man called police on June 22 to report that someone placed a bumper sticker on a For Sale sign in Orient that included an expletive. The sticker was removed with no damage to the sign.

Police were called to a Greenport business on June 22 to investigate a report of a fight. They found a suspect leaving on a bicycle and interviewed him. He stated that he had a verbal argument with a man at the business over money he said was owed to him. He said he was threatened by the man, so he took out a knife and made a verbal threat. Both subjects agreed to stay away from one another.

On June 23, a Mattituck business phoned police to report that an unknown man was walking between the cars in the parking lot. Police interviewed a suspect who said he lived next door and was just smoking a cigar. Police advised the man to stay off the closed business property in the future.

A Greenport woman called police on June 23 to report that her next door neighbor had installed four “No Trespassing” signs facing her property and that she felt it was done to annoy her. The man who placed the signs said he did so because there were attempted break-ins at his house. Police found that the signs were placed legally, but also found that there had been no reports of attempted break-ins at the property. The complainant said she would install plantings to block the signs.

An employee at the Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport called police on June 23 to report a highly intoxicated man sleeping at a library desk. Police asked the intoxicated man to leave and he refused, cursing at police and telling them to go ahead and arrest him, which they did.

A Miller Place man phoned police on June 23 to report that someone had trespassed on his property and turned the water and a fan off for his swimming pool, which he was trying to fill. Police have no suspects.

An 18-year-old Centereach man was charged with DWI after a traffic stop on Main Road on June 23 at 10:11 p.m. Brandon R. Ruszkowski was observed operating a 2004 Jeep with a defective brake light, police said. He was stopped and found to be intoxicated according to the report. He was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing. Ruszkowski was held for arraignment.

A 22-year-old Greenport man was arrested on DWI and unlicensed operation charges after he was observed driving a 2014 Honda without headlights on Route 25 in Greenport on June 23 at 10:55 p.m. Police said Sterling Smiley was stopped when he was eastbound on Route 25 without his vehicle headlights on. Police said Smiley failed roadside sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was also charged with unlicensed operation and operating a vehicle without headlights after dark. Smiley was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing, where he was held for arraignment.

A Southold man was airlifted to Stony Brook following a dirt bike accident on Main Bayview Road on June 24, Southold Town Police said in a press release. Police said Jonathan Gibson, 46, was lost control of the bike and fell as he drove on Main Bayview at about 7:20 p.m. Southold Fire Department rescue responded and called for a Suffolk Police helicopter to transport Gibson to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

An employee at CVS in Mattituck phoned police on June 24 to report a man trying to fill several fraudulent prescriptions. When police arrived they found a New York City man in the company of a Long Island City woman who had an order of protection out on him from New York City Criminal Court. Police arrested the man and will investigate the prescription fraud.
