The Raymond J. Cleaves American Legion Post in Mattituck has a new lease on life.

The 97-year-old post, whose membership roll has been barely enough to sustain it for more than a decade, was very near shutting down this year. But a membership push this summer led to 12 new members being sworn in and another five transferring from other posts, according to post adjutant Art Tillman.

On Thursday, the post elected a slate of officers: Commander, Bob Neudeck; First Vice Commander, Bill Goggins; Second Vice Commander, Ed Rittberg; Sergeant of Arms, Ed Thompson; and Adjutant, Art Tillman.

The post, named for World War I casualty Raymond J. Cleaves was formed in 1920 by Mattituck-area veterans of that war, just one year after the national organization was established.

Veterans and the children of veterans are eligible for membership in the American Legion.

The organization advocates for veterans on many issues, Tillman said.

“It was the Legion who fought the government to include Agent Orange as a disability from war. It is the Legion that advocates for VA Hospitals and patients. It is the Legion who remembers all those who have given lives for their country. It is the Legion that does so much more for the community,” Tillman wrote in an email. “Please join us in keeping our historic post alive and honoring those who have given so much so we can live free.”
