It was a picture-perfect day for a kick-up-your-heels summertime concert in Mitchell Park yesterday.
Brady Rymer, a rock-and-roller who turned his attention to children’s music after he became a dad 20 years ago, gave his young fans — and their parents and grandparents — the all-out, energetic performance that is his trademark.
The free concert, sponsored by the North Fork libraries from Greenport to Riverhead every summer for the past six years, drew a large crowd to the Greenport Village waterfront park.
“We always have a tremendous turnout,” said Floyd Memorial Library director of children’s services Joe Cortale. “It’s a great concert — so much fun for everyone.”
Cortale said the libraries share the cost of the performance — “And he gives us a North Fork hometown discount.”
The Southold-based Rymer — who jumps, kicks and dances his way through every tune as he sings and plays guitar and harmonica — has been nominated for three Grammy awards for albums released in 2008, 2014 and this year.
Before he began writing and performing family music, Rymer was a founding member of the jam band From Good Homes, recording and touring with acts from the Dave Matthews Band to Bob Dylan and Bob Weir’s Ratdog.
He was accompanied yesterday by Larry Eagle on drums.
