Southold Town Police blotter: July 17-23

Excerpts from the Southold Town Police Press Reports, July 23, 2017

A Southold man reported to police that some time around July 14 a lawnmower valued at $4,000 was taken from his residence. Detectives were notified.

A Mattituck man phoned police on July 17 to report that between June 22 and July 14, jewelry worth a total of $32,000 was stolen from his home. Detective Harned was notified and responded. There was no sign of forced entry into the residence.

A North Carolina police captain contacted the Southold Police Department on July 17 to request assistance in tracking down property that was mistakenly shipped to a Mattituck address. A North Carolina man had purchased a gold coin on eBay and accidentally returned it to the Mattituck address; he had proof that the package was delivered. Police responded to the Mattituck residence that allegedly received the package but no one was home. They will continue their investigation.

A Mattituck woman reported to police that on July 18 she found piles of nails scattered around the tires of her vehicle which was parked at her residence. She told police that she suspected they were placed there by a neighbor with whom she has been having an ongoing dispute.

On July 18 a Southold man reported that a bicycle valued at $500 had been taken by his employee and he wanted it returned. Police searched unsuccessfully for the employee. No further information was available.

An Eastern Long Island Hospital staff member called police on July 18 to report that a patient who had been administered anesthesia earlier had left the hospital and was operating a vehicle. Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate the patient.

A Mattituck farmer called police on July 18 to report that a group of people who picked berries from her farm and left without paying. Police were unable to track down the suspects since the car they were driving had a temporary registration and there was no data available for it.

On July 18 police and Mattituck Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in Laurel. They found a burning car parked between a boat and another vehicle. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which appeared to have started in the engine compartment and didn’t seem suspicious.

A Southold woman reported to police that someone had opened a Lord & Taylor credit card under her name and had charged $2,194 worth of merchandise. The transactions were done on June 15 at a Lord & Taylor store in Garden City. Detectives were notified.

Police received a call on July 21 from a Cutchogue woman who reported that someone was using a metal detector and digging large holes at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic. Police responded and spoke to the offender, who agreed to fill in the holes she had made.

A Mattituck man phoned police on July 22 to report that someone had thrown a garbage can into the bay, pulled up a fence post, and removed several signs from Veterans Beach in Mattituck. Police notified the Department of Public Works and will increase patrols in that area.

An anonymous caller reported that a group of fishermen were camping out on Bailie’s Beach in Mattituck on July 23. Police issued several summonses and told the fishermen to remove their tents from the beach.

On July 23 police received a report of a mobile home that was parked on the causeway in East Marion dumping what appeared to be waste water into the sewer it was parked over. Police responded and interviewed the mobile home owner who said he was getting water for his plants.

A police officer on routine patrol in East Marion on July 23 spotted an ATV traveling eastbound on Route 15 and the operator and passenger were not wearing helmets. He attempted to stop the ATV, but it took off and after a brief pursuit the subjects stopped. Police found the driver to be in possession of a marijuana cigarette. He was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing.
