When Ruby Wins was 12 years old she was standing in line at a market when she suddenly turned to the woman behind her and said, “Don’t worry, he said he’s okay. He’s in peace.” The startled woman turned and ran out of the store, leaving her groceries behind, Wins recalls. Wins’ mother chased after her and apologized for anything her young daughter might have said to upset her. But the woman wasn’t upset, just surprised. She told Wins’ mother that her dad had just passed away and she had been thinking about him.
The incident in the grocery store happened over 40 years ago, Wins says, but it remains vivid in her memory.
“I was just standing there and felt the message and knew it was for that woman,” she says.
Wins, who recently opened Sunset Psychic in Cutchogue, was born and raised in Arizona, the youngest of seven sisters and the granddaughter of a Cherokee Indian spiritual healer and psychic medium. Growing up, she knew that her grandmother was a spiritual person, but never knew exactly what she did.
“She traveled a lot,” says Wins, “but when I visited her I could feel something special around her.”
Wins said she began having visions, picking up on people’s energies and feeling presences at the age of 12. That’s when her mother explained to her about her grandmother’s abilities and gave her the choice of learning more about her own.
Wins chose to go with her grandmother, learning how to meditate, how to ground her energies and tap into her abilities.
“My mother felt that because my ability was so strong, the healthiest thing for me would be to understand it and it was my choice to go learn from my grandmother,” she says.
“She started to teach me about chakra energies, balancement, the inner lights and spirituality. I even traveled with her to Tibet and India when I was 14.”
Wins moved to the East Coast with her family when she was 17 and continued to study with her grandmother. After her grandmother died when Wins was 21, she began to work with the public, giving readings and teaching meditation.
“I loved it so much,” she says. “I loved the light I saw in people’s eyes and I loved what my grandmother had done – the peace she brought to people in meditation, the guidance. People loved her so much.”
Wins said she began her own business in New Jersey, doing chakra healing, meditation and life coaching more than 30 years ago.
“I teach people how to release stress, anxiety and self-doubt. How to go into their inner emotions and face their fears, wants and needs. I help them make peace with people in their lives who have hurt them or who they have hurt.”
Wins stresses that everything that takes place during a session is strictly confidential and even declined having her photo taken for this story in her effort to preserve her privacy and the privacy of her clients.
Wins gives Tarot card readings, palm readings and astrological love readings. She works with minerals and crystals and is also a medium, someone who has the ability to communicate with the spirit world.
“People come in and they want to connect with someone who has passed,” she says. “They want to feel that person’s energy or spirit.”
Occasionally, Wins says, she will connect with an unsettled spirit, usually due to someone passing away and leaving behind unfinished business. Wins teaches clients how to send these spirits white light through prayer and meditation.
Wins is a strong believer in the healing powers of meditation and teaches meditation methods to many of her clients.
“Meditation can be life-changing,” she says. “Even just 10 minutes a day can help you reground your thoughts and your self. When you are spiritually disconnected or damaged, it starts to physically interrupt your life, causing fatigue, health issues, body aches and pains. Meditation helps people feel better physically.”
Wins does not identify with any one religion; instead she embraces many ideologies. Displayed in the comfortable sitting room at her Cutchogue office are symbols from several religions: a menorah sits on a side table, a Christian painting hangs on one wall, a print of the seven Indian chakras hangs on another.
“I am open to every religion in the world; I’ve traveled so much and have come to believe that we have one God that everyone has a different name for,” she explains.
Wins won’t comment on mediums who have been shown to be frauds; she’s confident in her own abilities and is happy in her life’s work.
“I love helping people find peace within themselves and in their lives” she says.
Wins continues to maintain her business in New Jersey, spending several days every month seeing clients there. The rest of the time she can be found at her 25500 Main Road, Cutchogue location or through her website, Psychic Ruby Life Coach.
