A 10-year-old boy, his father and a Good Samaritan were rescued from the waters of the Long Island Sound off Orient Point today by Cross Sound Ferry employees.

The boy was swimming and got caught by a strong current that pulled him away from shore at about 3:15 this afternoon. The boy’s father, Jordan Stern, 43, of Brooklyn and Hassan Hamza, 65, of West Babylon went into the water to rescue the child, only to also get caught in the current, according to Southold Town Police.

Crew on Cross Sound Ferry’s vessel Mary Ellen heard the incident on their radio while docked at the ferry terminal. Mate William Stanley and deli clerk Kalol Wloblawska boarded a rescue boat from the ferry and rescued all three from the water, police said.

They were taken to Orient by the Sea marina and turned over to Orient Fire Department, which was waiting with an ambulance. The boy and the two men were all checked and released at the scene.
