Suffolk homicide squad investigating death of man whose body washed ashore on Laurel beach Sept. 3

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of the man whose body washed ashore on a Peconic Bay beach in Laurel Sept. 3.

Southold Town Police requested the assistance of the county homicide squad, Chief Martin Flatley said today.

“The incident appears to be non-criminal at this time,” Suffolk County Police assistant commissioner Justin Meyers said.

The county police department did not release the identity of the man or respond to a question about whether he had been identified.

Flatley said today when Southold “handed this investigation over to the SCPD Homicide Squad for further investigation…they were fairly sure of the identity of the subject but they had not been through the actual ID with the ME’s office.”

The body washed ashore in front of a private residence in Laurel on the afternoon of Sept. 3, Southold police said that day.
