Sept. 11 memorial services set for Monday evening at Jean Cochran Park

The public is invited to memorial ceremonies for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack scheduled to take place Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic.

There will be 2,958 flags for placement at the park during the ceremonies, which are hosted by the 9/11 Committee and the Southold Town Fire Chiefs Council. The community is asked to stop at the park and place a flag in memory of the people who lost their lives in the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

A special ceremony by all six fire departments will take place at 6 p.m. at the Sept. 11 memorial statue inside the park.

Organizer Tracey Orlando said it’s the mission of the committee to make sure the events of that horrific day and the victims of the attack are never forgotten.

A special presentation about the history of the events leading up to Sept. 11 will be given by the commander of the Southold American Legion Post 803 this evening at 5:30 p.m. at the town recreation center in Peconic.
