A Jamesport man was arrested yesterday morning in Greenport after leading police on a pursuit that originated in Riverhead.

Southold Town Police charged Roger J. Makowski, 59, with unlawfully fleeing a police officer as well as vehicle and traffic law violations.

Southold police were contacted by Riverhead police to request that Southold be on the lookout for a black Volvo sedan driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Peconic Bay Boulevard, according to a Southold Town Police press release issued this morning. Riverhead police said the operator had an active warrant out of Riverhead Town Justice Court.

Southold police located the vehicle northbound on Bay Avenue in Mattituck. The vehicle failed to stop and evaded police before eventually being stopped in the Patriot gas station in Greenport, police said.

Makowski was taken into custody and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital, where he was turned over to Riverhead Town Police, according to the report.

No further information was immediately available from Riverhead police.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
