The Rev. Canon John Madden, 80

Rev. Canon John E. Madden died at his home in Laurel on September 9, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones. He was 80 years old.

Born in the Bronx on April 9, 1937 to James and Lilly Madden, he later attended Queens College, Nashotah House Theological Seminary and St. Vladimir’s Yeshiva.

For 54 years, he was an Episcopal priest serving at St. John the Baptist Church in Center Moriches and St. Thomas of Canterbury in Smithtown.

He has been a resident of the North Fork for the past 22 years and a member of Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck.

He is survived by his wife Gail (nee Murphy) whom he married on June 28, 1992 at Christ Church in Babylon, four children Patrick Madden and his partner Mark Hyman of Boston, Don Venezia and his wife Lynda of New Jersey, Liz and her husband Neil Orlando of Maryland and Amanda Venezia and her fiancé Bill Lehman of Virginia, by his sister Nora and her husband Robert Seplavy of Bay Shore and by four grandchildren, Steven, James, Alina and Julia Venezia.

A Requiem Mass will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, 36 Cathedral Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530 with The Right Reverend Lawrence C. Provenzano officiating. Interment will be at Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon.
