Two local environmental groups will take part in the International Beach Clean Up Day planned for Saturday, Sept. 16. The Group for the East End and the North Fork Environmental Council are asking local beach buffs to come out and show their love for our beautiful beaches by spending a couple of hours clearing the beaches of harmful plastics and other trash.
The Group for the East End is holding its event at Breakwater Beach in Mattituck from 10 a.m. to noon. There, locals can participate in the world’s largest volunteer effort to create trash-free seas. Plastic has been found in 62 percent of all sea birds and in 100 percent of all sea turtle species according to Christine Tylee, the program and stewardship coordinator of the Group for the East End.
The Group for the East End will provide bags, gloves and light refreshments. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot at the end of Breakwater Road.
To lend a helping hand contact Tylee at 631-765-6450 ext. 208 or email ctylee@eastendenvironment.org.
The North Fork Environmental Council will be tackling trash at two local beaches. Clean ups will take place at Bailie Beach Park in Mattituck and Truman’s Beach in Orient. Volunteers should meet at either location. The clean ups are both scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m.
The NFEC will provide bags and gloves but suggest volunteers should feel free to bring their own gloves and buckets. The NFEC suggests downloading the app CleanSwell on a phone as all data collected will be recorded.
