Bright and early on day two of Greenport’s Maritime Festival, folks lined up to attend the annual Paul Drum Pirates and Mermaids fundraising breakfast at Front Street Station. No one complained about the wait, however, as they were met at the entrance by Paul Drum himself, who smiled and greeted many visitors by name.
As a jolly pirate circulated throughout the dining room, joking with children and posing for photos, The Two Daves, David Berson and David Nyce, played nautical music to entertain the crowd.
This was the fourth annual breakfast to raise money for the Paul Drum Nautical Education Program, which is run in cooperation with the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation. The foundation sponsors free programs for local children ages 7-12 to educate them about safety and enjoyment of our waters.
Drum, a young man with Down syndrome, attends East End Disabilities Associates and works at Front Street Station, his family’s restaurant. For the fourth consecutive year Paul has been honored, first being named Greenport Mayor for the Day, then Southold Town Police Chief for the Day, Suffolk County Executive for the Day and this morning, New York State Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo was on hand to name him Assemblyman for the Day.
