Hallockville Museum Farm offers a full fall schedule of events

Hallockville Museum Farm has planned a fall full of activities ranging from arts and crafts to naturalist hikes. Grouped in date of event order and by types of interests, they’re listed below with all the information necessary to register and enjoy them.

Make a Log Cabin in the Woods quilted ornament. Learn this traditional quilting technique (by hand or machine-your choice) and make a tree ornament. This is a traditional foundation pieced workshop, in the log cabin style. It’s a great way to use up scraps. You can hand sew in your recliner and use the technique in quilts, table runners, placemats and ornaments.

Bring scissors and basic sewing supplies, Christmas fabric scraps in white, off-white, gold, red and green to share with classmates and your sewing machine with neutral thread. The foundation will be provided and some fabrics will be available.

This event takes place Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $35 for members or $45 for non-members.

Make a harvest-themed block print tote bag. No experience is necessary. Block printmaking methods have been used for centuries to create images for illustrations, fine arts and textile designs. During the 18th century, artisans were inspired by textiles that came from the Far East. They learned to use intricate block prints to create beautiful fabrics. In this workshop, participants will explore simple techniques used to cut linoleum blocks and print them on tote bags.

This event takes place Oct. 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for members or $55 for non-members.

Learn how to make a Shibori scarf. Shibori is a Japanese term for several methods of dying fabric by folding, stitching, twisting or securing it before dying to produce patterns. We will explore different folds and ways to produce lovely designs. When the class is over you will have your own custom scarf. Wear old clothes or bring an apron and bring protective gloves. Dyes, silk 11 inch by 60 inch scarf, string and rubber bands will be provided.

Vivien Pollack, the instructor, has over 30 years in the industry as a textile designer, silk painter and teacher.

This event takes place Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $75 for members or $85 for non-members.

Learn how to make a nuno felted autumn shawl. Learn the techniques of Nuno felting. (Nuno is Japanese for fabric.) This technique was developed in the early 90s and combines raw wool with a loose or open weave material in order to create a lightweight fabric. Students will create a beautiful shawl out of organic cotton or silk. Students will email instructor in advance to their desired color palette ahead of time. There is a $25 material fee (to be paid at the time of class) which includes a silk habotai or organic cotton scarf panel. The class is limited to ages 16 and up.

This event takes place Nov. 3 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $65 for members or $75 for non-members.

Make a wool Polish folk art ornament. Learn simple embroidery stitches to make a Polish folk art ornament. No prior embroidery experience is required. The ornament is constructed of either white or red wool, with contrasting embroidery thread. Bring small and larger scissors and your basic sewing kit including any embroidery needles you have, a thimble if you use one and pins. Embroidery thread and wool will be provided.

Make a Thanksgiving table centerpiece. Thanksgiving celebrates the bounty of the land and is also a chance to gather around a table with loved ones. Participants will learn how to create a natural Long Island pumpkin centerpiece for the Thanksgiving table. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring cuttings from your own garden.

This event takes place Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $25 for members or $35 for non-members.

Make a Christmas cow-themed basket. Deck the halls with this charming rectangular splint-style basket made from natural rattan. To get in the festive spirit participants may adorn the basket with a pottery wow nestled in a pine branch and little red bow around Bossy’s neck. This is a fun basket to learn to weave and finish with sturdy oak handle.

This event takes place Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $85 for members or $105 for non-members.

Nature-themed activities

Take a hike through the Hallock State Park Preserve to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Naturalist John Turner and local guide Richard Wines will lead the hike to point out migrating birds, animal tracks, woodland flora and more. Participants will also hear about the conservation of the parkland and adjacent farm fields – over 529 acres in total. This newly completed trail system is the perfect place to celebrate National Public Lands Day. This event is co-sponsored by Peconic Land Trust and Hallockville Museum Farm.

This event takes place Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The hike is free.

Go on a guided autumn bird walk with Mary Laura Lamont, a local naturalist and birding expert. Lamont will lead the search for birds through the woods and fields of Hallockville and Hallock State Park Preserve. Bring binoculars, appropriate apparel, and sturdy footwear.
