Southold defeated Mattituck 3-2 in double-overtime at Mattituck High School today.
What was a very physical game for both squads, with body to body contact, sliding tackles, and the absence of calls going both ways kept this a tight game.
Mattituck would get on the board first with a strike from Chris Nicholson to make it 1-0. A short while later, Southold would even it up with a goal from Mario Contreras. Southold would strike again on a quick shot from Parker Bakowski to make it 2-1.
In the second half, the game was back and fourth, with a lot of play happening in midfield, but Mattituck gained control and drove into Southold’s zone. A few quick passes and Jack Burkhardt snuck one into the back of the Southold cage to tie it at two.
In the second overtime, after some quick gives and goes, Ryan Herrmann snuck between two Mattituck defenders and buried the game winner in the net.
