Mattituck defeated Southold 3-2 at Mattituck High School yesterday — a big game between two of the top three teams in League Vll.

Mattituck (10-2) and Southold (9-2) came to play, hoping to exact revenge for their 1-0 loss to Southold last time the two North Fork teams met.

After a slow start with a lot of back-and-forth action, Mattituck scored first on a close-in goal by Mackenzie Daly. Mattituck added another on a 20-yard strike from Amber Rochon, to make it 2-0 at the half.

Southold came out hard in the second half, hoping to control the momentum and put one on the board. Midway through the second half, Calire Gatz was the recipient of a long pass from midfield and drove in with Southold’s Annie Lincoln defending, connected for the third Mattituck goal. Mattituck thought it would notch an easy win, but Southold forward Jillian Golden deposited two goals into the Mattituck net with about two minutes remaining in the game. Mattituck played cautiously for the remaining minute and 30 seconds and held on for the big victory over Southold.
