Greenport Village is expanding Halloween celebrations this year to include much more than just the traditional costume parade through the downtown.

“We’re hoping to grow this into a community-wide, family Halloween event that can be enjoyed by adults and children,” said Mary Bess Phillips, who has been working with the Village of Greenport, the Business Improvement District and the school’s Parent Teacher Organization to put the event together.

The festivities will begin with a costume parade for humans and canines which kicks off at Floyd Memorial Library at 10 a.m., makes its way down Main Street and finishes up in Mitchell Park. Afterwards in the park there will be a costume contest, free rides on the carousel, children’s games and cotton candy and popcorn machines. An agility course and bobbing for tennis balls will be set up to amuse four-legged participants.

There will be first, second and third place ribbons awarded for costumes in six categories: family, scariest, canine, canine/human duo, cutest and best homemade.

Painted pumpkins created by Greenport students will be on display at the Little Red Schoolhouse on Front Street.

The Halloween event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 28 starting at the library at 10 a.m. Floyd Memorial Library is located at 539 First Street in Greenport.
