Workers from the North Fork Animal Welfare League rescued an 8-week-old kitten from a dumpster in Laurel this morning.

A woman walking her dog near Bray Avenue and Main Road noticed the frightened kitten inside her neighbor’s dumpster and called NFAWL executive director Gillian Wood for help.

Wood sent dog trainer and kennel control officer Gina Lepine down right away.

“Gina dove right into the dumpster and picked up the kitten. It was scared but otherwise seemed to be in good shape,” said Wood.

Wood is unsure how the longhaired tortoise-shell kitten made it into the dumpster, but thinks that perhaps the mother moved it there.

“I don’t want to believe that someone was heartless enough to put the kitten in a dumpster,” she says.

After questioning neighbors and searching the area, NFAWL determined that the mother cat had not been spotted, so they brought the kitten to the shelter.

If anyone has information about where this kitten might have come from or if you spot the mother cat, Wood asks that you contact the shelter at 631 765-1811.
