Paul Gerard Edwards, 86

Paul Gerard Edwards of Muncy, Pennsylvania, formerly of Mattituck, died Oct. 27, 2017 at his home. He was 86 years old.

He was born Feb. 28, 1931 in Riverhead to Madison V. and Marjorie J. (Gerard) Edwards.

He graduated from Riverhead High School and attended Suffolk Community College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War after which he was honorably discharged. He married Carolyn Kratjewski on Mach 3, 1952.

He retired from Brookhaven National Laboratory as the supervisor of the hazardous waste division after 37 years.

He was a parishioner of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church and a member of the Riverhead Masonic Lodge #645 where he was a past district deputy grand master.

In his spare time, he greatly enjoyed sailing and woodworking and built two sailboats from scratch. He also repaired and rebuilt several other boats. He once led a Sea Scout ship in the early 1960s to help educate youth on boating skills and maritime history.

Predeceased by his sister Joan Edwards Sterns, he is survived by his wife of 65 years, his daughters Dr. Terry L. Edwards of Freeport, Brenda E. Kuritzky of Ossining, New York and Donna J. Zuna of Hyde Park, New York and one granddaughter, Stephanie Wood of Hyde Park, New York.

A memorial service will be held at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home, 406 East Main Street, Riverhead at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
