Southold Fish Market’s famous apparel goes global: Sweatshirt spotted in Africa by owner’s aunt

Charlie Manwaring, owner of Southold Fish Market, runs into people wearing shirts with their logo quite often, and not just on Long Island.

“My wife Rebecca and I ran into someone wearing one of our shirts in Hawaii once,” says Manwaring. “And two years ago a customer told us he’d seen one in Trinidad.”

But this week, a Southold Fish Market shirt was spotted by Rebecca’s Aunt Julie in a most unlikely place: Ngorongoro, Africa, over 7,000 miles from New York.

“Aunt Julie was traveling in Africa and when they pulled over at a rest stop she spotted the guy wearing one of our sweatshirts,” said Manwaring.

Unfortunately the man didn’t speak English so there’s no way of knowing where he got it, but he did pose for a photo.

Manwaring said that they change the colors every year and identified the sweatshirt as one from 2016.

“It’s your guess as good as mine where the guy got it,” said Manwaring. “But it’s pretty cool.”
