Cops: Sleepy driver crashes vehicle on Main Road in Laurel early Sunday

An East Marion man was injured when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his SUV into a utility pole and several trees on Route 25 in Laurel early Sunday morning, according to Southold Town Police.

Police said Richard Squitieri, 53, was driving a 1998 GMC Yukon eastbound on Route 25 at about 4:45 a.m. Sunday when he fell asleep, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a utility pole across from the Mattituck Car Wash. After striking the polie, the SUv continued across a lawn and came to rest in a wooded area after striking several trees, police said.

Mattituck Fire Department responded to extricate the driver from his vehicle. A Mattituck Fire Department ambulance transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of minor injuries, according to police.
