Cops: Carpenter pawned jewelry stolen from Mattituck home

Southold Town Police have charged a North Carolina man in connection with the sale of jewelry stolen from a Mattituck home. Police said Harold Varnot, 56, of Clayton, North Carolina sold the stolen jewelry at pawn stores in Shirley and Patchogue. The jewelry, valued at over $50,000, had been stolen from a Mattituck home were Varnot had been employed as a carpenter, police said.

Varnot was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, police said.

The investigation is ongoing by Southold and Suffolk police detectives, according to a press release issued this afternoon by Southold police.
