Marjorie Olive Brown, 95

Marjorie Olive Brown, a resident of Mattituck for more than 50 years, died Dec. 3, 2017 at her home. She was 95 years old.

She was born in Newark, New Jersey on Dec. 24, 1921 to Russell Cort and Genevieve Kolb. In her youth, she enjoyed visiting her uncle Will Kolb’s Newark candy store, the site where he invented the first candied apple.

She married her first husband George Bird, a legendary farm auctioneer, in 1948. They had two children Nancy and Richard. In 1959 they moved to Mattituck and she became a member of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

In 1975 she married K.G. Brown, the inventor of the ice vending machine. They enjoyed flying around the Northeast in his plane. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing piano and donating to local charities.

Predeceased by her husband K.G. Brown and her son-in-law James Wells, she is survived by her children Nancy Wells and Rick Bird, her grandson Peter Bird, her former daughter-in-law Linda Bird and many nieces and nephews across the country with whom she kept in touch.

She will be interred at Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

The family asks for memorial donations to East End Hospice (to which they will always be grateful), to the East End Lions Club, or to the Mattituck Presbyterian Church’s Loaves and Fishes outreach program which feeds the needy of the North Fork.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home is assisting the family.
