A winter storm warning remains in effect today for expected heavy snow, according to the National Weather Service in New York.

The snow may briefly mix with rain or sleet across the eastern tip of the North Fork this evening; mixing with rain or sleet on the South Fork is likely this afternoon. Plan on difficult travel conditions, the weather service says.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday.

A low pressure system along the Carolina coast will track south and east of Long Island today, passing near the near 40/70 benchmark by this evening, according to NWS forecasters. The low will move off the New England coast tonight.

Accumulations of five to seven inches are expected across the North Fork, with lesser amounts across the South Fork due to mixing. Three to six inches of snow is forecast for western Suffolk, Nassau and the NYC metro area.
