If you haven’t enrolled in a health insurance plan yet for January, time is running out.

Friday, December 15 is the final day to sign up for a health insurance plan through the New York State marketplace for coverage starting January 1.

Residents can create an account and sign up for a plan at nystateofhealth.ny.gov, or by calling the state marketplace’s customer service center at 1-855-355-5777 (Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Though the Trump administration cut the open enrollment period in half this year – from 90 days to 45 days – New York has extended the enrollment period for its own marketplace to January 31 for 2018 coverage.

Residents seeking a healthcare plan beginning January 1, however, will need to meet the December 15 deadline.

For healthcare coverage effective February 1, New York residents will need to sign up by January 15. And the last day to sign up for healthcare on the state marketplace for 2018 coverage will be January 31, which will enroll residents in plans that take effect March 1.

New York State of Health is holding events throughout New York this week to assist residents with enrolling in a health plan through the marketplace. The following three events are in Suffolk County:

  • Greenport: December 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church (614 Third Street).
  • Patchogue: December 13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., HRH of Patchogue (365 East Main Street)
  • Coram: December 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., HRH of Coram (72 Middle Country Road)

In the month of November, enrollment in the state marketplace outpaced last year’s enrollment by 13 percent, according to a state press release.
