Man dies in Sagaponack house fire

On Saturday, March 8th, 2014 at 5:57 am, Southampton Town Police received a 911 call of a house on fire. Upon arrival to the residence, located at 198 Narrow Lane East in Sagaponack, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Bridgehampton Fire Department & EMS, Sag Harbor Fire Department & Ambulance, Southampton Fire Department, and East Hampton Fire Department all responded to assist in rescue and extinguishing the fire. One of the occupants was able to escape the fire with minor injuries. The second occupant, James Beres, 71, died in the fire along with the family dog. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by Southampton Town Police Detectives in conjunction with Southampton Town Fire Marshalls, the Suffolk County Police Arson Unit, the Suffolk County Police Crime Scene Unit, and the Medical Examiner.
