Fishing report: Another great week in local waters around the North Fork

Another great week of fishing all around the North fork. Porgy fishing has held up very well. Fluke fishing is still fantastic and now reports of some larger bass are starting to roll in.

2015_brian_nigro_badgeAccording to Captain Jon Bowen of the Capt Bob Fleet, water temperatures have been rising and pool fish are consistently in the seven to nine pound range.

Out in Orient Point, Captain Dan Buckley of the Orient Star IV had Tom Logan’s charter of 12 out for some night bass fishing. Despite a tricky bite, they were able to land their limit of bass to 24 pounds, using bucktails. On Sunday’s open boat porgy/fluke trip, morning porgy fishing was excellent. In the afternoon, the boat switched over to fluke fishing. Captain Dan described the fluke bite as phenomenal, with mostly keepers going to 6.5 pounds. There is limited room for open-by-reservation trips this weekend on the Orient Star IV.

The Prime Time III and Captain Mike Boccio’s report was very similiar to Captain Dan’s. Great porgy/fluke bite with bass to 30 pounds and fluke to eight pounds.

Captain Rob Thompson had Julia Horowitz out on Saturday. She sealed the deal with stripers on her own hand-tied flies. Captain Rob said there were lots of fly fisherman out on the water but the fish were only biting on the outgoing tide.

Dennis from the Peconic Star Fleet in Greenport says despite terrific fluke fishing, crowds have been light. Wednesday’s pool fish was a seven pounder caught by Mike Janickey. Porgies seem to be getting bigger, according to Dennis, with the bite often slowing through the slack tide, and then turning back on.

All in all, the bite is on. It’s a good time to grab a rod and head out. If You have a report, contact me anytime at eelocalreports@gmail.com ,I will be happy to print your story.
