Kait’s Angels Poker Run takes place Sunday; memorial mass planned for Kait Doorhy in August

Kaitlyn Doorhy’s memory lives on in the many North Forkers who have come together to do good works and keep her legacy of giving alive.

This Sunday, the non-for-profit organization formed to continue with her lifelong focus on philanthropy will host the First Annual Kait’s Angels Poker Run.

The event begins Sunday at Renegade Classics Biker Outlet, 1186 Main Street in Riverhead, with registration taking place from 10 to 11 a.m. After the run, a celebration will be held at 3 p.m. at Mattituck High School.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles and classic cars are all welcome, with the event including stops along the North Fork.

The poker run is an organized event where participants using motorcycles, classic cars or other means of transportation will visit five to seven local checkpoints on the North Fork, drawing a playing card in a sealed envelope at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. Winning is purely a matter of chance, but participants may purchase multiple entries to increase chances of winning, the Kait’s Angels website explains.

The charity poker runs require a fee to enter and extra free for each additional hand — a small portion of the fee goes to funding the event, including the prizes, while the rest goes to the Kait’s Angels treasury, to help in various ways around the community, the site explains.

Prizes will be awarded for the best hands.

The only requirement is that riders arrive at the final checkpoint by the designated time near the end of the day, where the awards will be given out and the after-party will take place with food, refreshments, and music.

Next, a Kait’s Angels Yard Sale, with proceeds to benefit Benjamin Pileski, another Mattituck High School graduate, 20, who was critically injured after being hit by a taxi in Montauk on July 5, will take place at the Doorhy home, located at 1125 Ole Jule Lane in Mattituck, on August 15, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. All are welcome.

On Saturday, August 22, which marks one year since Kait lost her life in a tragic accident while away at college, Darla Doorhy, Kaitlyn’s mother, has organized a special memorial mass for her beloved daughter.

“It will be a sad day for our family,” she said.

The mass will take place at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on Main Road in Mattituck. At the mass, a guest speaker will talk about the life-saving impacts of organ donation; she is the recipient of a liver.

After Kait died last year, her family donated her organs so that she could continue her lifelong dedication to giving back.

2014_0828_Kait55The community has mourned the former Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Queen, coming together to form Kait’s Angels and do good works and random Angel Acts of kindness in her memory and to keep her beautiful spirit alive.

A Buddy Bench was dedicated in her honor at Cutchogue East and most recently, a Kait’s Angels designer Wingo event raised funds for the not-for-profit group — and to celebrate Kait’s 21st birthday in heaven.
