Mom whose son has heart condition in race to find new housing

A local mom whose son has a heart condition is desperately searching for a new home.

And time is running out.

Angela Marie Staron is a lifelong Southold resident; her son is a junior at Southold High School.

Her landlord, Staron said, has decided not to rent the house where they’ve lived for four years any longer — leaving Staron and her son in a race for time to find a new home.

That’s why Staron has reached out via a Go Fund Me page detailing her plight and the need to move by January 1.

So far, the page has raised $470 of a $2,500 goal. The funds are needed to help Staron pay for moving expenses, including a security deposit.

After Staron and her husband divorced, she said, she and her son lived in a shelter for six months due to financial issues.

“Since then, I have had medical issues that have kept me from getting myself out of this situation,” she wrote on the Go Fund Me page.

Her son, she said, has been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a rare condition.

“Two years ago he had a pacemaker and defribrillator ICD unit implanted,” she said, leaving her son needing to be careful about what activities he participates in.

Some activities, including gym and sports, are limited, she said.

“He wants to find a job,” but needs a position that’s not too physically taxing, Staron said.

Mother and son make frequent trips to Cohen’s Children Medical Center in New Hyde Park; a Ronald McDonald House is located nearby, where Staron can stay when her son has all day appointments.

“They have been wonderful, and we were very lucky to discover his condition; most cases go undiagnosed,” she said.

But challenges are mounting: “The past few years have been hard, and now, it has gotten worse,” Staron said. “We only have until January 1, less than three months to find a new place.”

Staron does receive Section 8, but said that does not cover a security deposit or realtors’ fee.

“I really am only doing this so my son is as least stressed as possible,” she said. “He is in the middle of his junior year and is worried we will have to live in a shelter again. This was a last resort for me.”

Staron added, “I am asking if anyone can help us get a little closer to our goal, so we will at least have a chance to find something — which is hard even without Section 8 — anything will help.”
