Police: Child passenger injured in crash when driver swerved to avoid deer

A 7-year-old child was injured in an accident on County Road 48 last night when her mother swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway and lost control of her vehicle, according to Southold Town Police.

Police said Monica Asmal-Barrera, 29, of New York City, was traveling westbound on County Road 48 in Mattituck just before 10 p.m. when a deer entered the north side of the westbound lane. Asmal-Barrera attempted to maneuver around the deer and lost control of her vehicle, winding up in the median, police said. Her 7-year-old daughter was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital with a minor head injury, according to the police report. Asmal-Barrera was uninjured. Her vehicle was towed from the scene.
