Revised forecast: less than an inch of snow for Suffolk this morning

Today’s winter weather advisory has been canceled by the National Weather Service. Periods of light snow this morning will only accumulate to an inch or less across the North Fork, according to the latest forecast.

“We have cancelled the winter weather advisory. The latest trends in observations and model guidance indicate that snowfall we receive tonight will be generally on the light side, with amounts falling short of advisory,” the weather service said in a statement.

“Our latest snowfall forecast has been lowered, with less than an inch inland and 1-2″ near the coast through Wednesday morning. There remains a possibility that only a coating to less than inch occurs across the entire region during this time.”

Although snowfall rates will be low, the snow will stick to roads and walkways, especially untreated surfaces, resulting in slippery conditions. Extra caution should be used if traveling this morning, the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement issued this morning.

It will be cold with a chance of light snow through Thursday night, according to the weather service forecast. Very cold air moves into the region by the weekend, accompanied by strong, gusty winds, producing “dangerously cold” wind chill values — which could reach as low as 20 below — Saturday into Sunday, according to NWS meteorologists.
