Mattituck High School students will be able to take deeply discounted classes for credit at Suffolk County Community College beginning next school year.
The Mattituck Board of Education authorized an agreement with SCCC Thursday that will allow Mattituck students to take classes at $53 per credit hour instead of the college’s usual tuition of $167 per credit hour.
“It’s a great cost reduction for families,” said board president Laura Jens-Smith. “The cost of tuition can be so high in some schools these days, so this is an opportunity to earn credits at a lower rate before the student even enters college.”
The classes, unlike those currently offered at Mattituck through Farmingdale State College, are not taken during school hours. They will be taken at Suffolk’s campus, and will not factor into the student’s grade point average at the high school.
“It’s different from the other classes we currently offer because of the experience,” Jens-Smith said. “You get to experience being in college, on a campus, so the transition isn’t as hard when the time comes.”
The classes will be available to juniors and seniors. Students who wish to sign up for classes must take an entrance exam at Suffolk’s Riverhead campus, and must maintain an average of 85 or higher at Mattituck while enrolled. Students can take up to 24 credits total for transfer to a college institution, and must earn a grade of C or higher in order to get credit.
