A cup of ale and downward dog: craft beer and yoga make a perfect pairing at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company

Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is bringing relaxation to the next level with its new outdoor yoga-and-beer classes.

“It’s all about the balance in life,” said instructor Lauren Adamkiewicz.

Adamkiewicz, of Patchogue, has been a bartender at the brewery since April and came up with the idea to hold weekly yoga classes on the large grass lawn of the property.

“I’d been doing some research on social media. I follow a lot of different breweries, and I noticed this popping up in tasting rooms all over,” Adamkiewicz said. “Yoga and beer is officially a thing.”

“Doing yoga in the grass, where you can see the vineyards, it’s really nice. So relaxing,” said Brittany Calderali of Peconic, who attended the first session last week. “I’ll definitely be back.”

Adamkiewicz got her yoga teaching certification in January, after deciding to make a major life change. She had been a bartender for the past ten years, and knew that her yogi life would not mix with 4 a.m. closing nights.

“I found this place in April, and right away it was a totally different experience,” she said. “And once I mentioned the yoga thing to [the owners], they were immediately on board.”

The class offers an hour of instructed beginner-level yoga for $15, which includes a beer afterwards. Adamkiewicz suggests that participants bring their own yoga mats — though the grass is soft enough to do without, she says.

“I think I’ll get a lot of people who’ve never tried yoga before and might be intimidated going into a yoga studio. Here, they’re comfortable — plus they get beer. It’s a win-win,” she said.

“My goal with this is to interest people who have never done yoga, get them coming to classes, noticing what it’s doing for their bodies,”Adamkiewicz said. “That’s what I love to do.”

The class will meet again Tuesday, June 28, at 10 a.m.
