Anti-bias task force seeking donations for seventh annual ‘Unity Picnic’

The Southold Anti-Bias Task Force is seeking donations for its annual Unity Picnic coming up next month.

The picnic, now in its seventh year, will have a theme of “celebrating diversity,” encouraging people to interact with others within their community “to forge bonds of friendship and understanding that will promote a bias-free community.”

The picnic will be held on Aug.13 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Peconic Community Center. Guests will enjoy live music and entertainment, as well as barbecue and a raffle featuring prizes from local business.

The group is looking for donated goods of all kinds — from tables and chairs to food to serve to prizes for the raffle.

“In the past we’ve gotten scarves, wallets, cups, wheelbarrows, fruit — it goes on,” said co-chair Valerie Shelby. “Every little bit helps.”

The task force asks that all donations be confirmed by July 29.

Editor’s note: The Anti-Bias Task Force is not seeking monetary donations to support the picnic as stated in a previously published version of this story which reported the discussion at the meeting yesterday. The Town Board did not authorize the task force to accept financial support and its discussion of doing so was in error, government liaison officer Denis Noncarrow said.
