Southold Free Library will waive all fines this weekend for patrons who donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Ericka Rose Auer.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. Auer, a 2014 graduate of Southold High School, lost her battle to the disease in November 2014.
“We miss her every day,” the library wrote in a Facebook post this afternoon. “All are welcome to make a donation of any amount and help find a cure.”
There is no cure for the disease, which has an average life expectancy of 40 to 50 years of age. Auer passed away on Nov. 20, 2014 at the age of 18.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is determined not only to find a cure but to improve the quality of life of those who suffer with it by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.”
The library will forgive late fees for anyone who donates between now and Nov. 20 to mark the anniversary of Auer’s passing.
